They told that, while in Barrackpore, Mangal Pandey showed the courage to resist the demeaning decision of British Army to use new Enfield Rifles which required soldiers to bite off the ends of the cartridge to load the gun. Mangal Pandey rebelled against English officers and killed many of them for their cruel behaviour towards Indians. He reminded fellow Indians of their self-respect. Finally, Mangal Pande was sentenced to death for his revolt. The students underlined that in the year of 1984, the Indian government issued a postage stamp to honour him. Several movies and stage plays have been based on his life, including the Hindi film 'Mangal Pandey : The Rising' and the stage play titled 'The Roti Rebellion' in 2005.
